Can you give a home to a feathered friend?

If you have visited Raystede you can’t have missed our exotic birds! Located in our large aviaries at the front of the site, we have many resident parrots, most of which will whistle, laugh and call to you as you walk past. The majority are here for the rest of their lives as the care they need is highly specialist and many have behavioural or medical issues that would be beyond the reach of a private home to manage. These include a few famous Raystede faces such as Ice Cream, the bare-eyed Cockatoo, Sinbad the African Grey and Ollie the Umbrella Cockatoo.

We do occasionally have a small number of exotics birds available for rehoming These include cockatiels, budgies, zebra finches, canaries and very occasionally, small parakeets. If you are interested in giving an exotic bird a home, you will need a safe and secure aviary (minimum size 6x4) with a safety porch to prevent escapee’s and  an insulated/heated shed were birds can shelter from poor weather. The entire structure must be rodent proof. We can offer lots of advice and support on furnishing your aviary, enrichment and diet.

Birds will be available during the Spring and Summer so that they can acclimatise to their new home when the weather is warmer in readiness for the colder, wetter winter months. They will venture out less when the temperature drops. If you are interested in rehoming a bird, please fill an application from and include clear photos of your set up. Application To Adot An Aviary Bird and send it to aviaries@raystede.org
