Event Date

7 August 2021

We have teamed up with Hatt Adventures again for our unique kayak challenge...

On Saturday 7th August we are challenging you to kayak 29km for Raystede down the majestic River Medway. You will have plenty of time to complete this challenge, and Hatt Adventures have said that most people will finish the kayak in 5-8 hours! The River Medway flows through West and East Sussex and into Kent, and you will pass characteristic meadows and orchards along the route.

The paddling is graded as easy, although there are a number of weirs to negotiate. Due to the distance of the challenge we do recommend that everyone who takes part has some experience of kayaking and that you train for it. We have a small number of places available in this challenge. Sign up for it today by clicking here.

We will meet at about 8 a.m. on the day, and you will receive a safety briefing from Hatt Adventures before beginning the challenge. You will have the opportunity to treat yourselves to pit stops along the way and we will provide lunch at the beautiful Teapot Island to keep you well fuelled for this ultimate kayak!

At the end of the challenge we will celebrate with more food and drink before transporting you back to your vehicles.

The registration fee for this kayak challenge is £35 and we're asking that each person raises £250 for the animals at Raystede.

If you have your own kayak, the registration fee to take part is £20. If you are thinking of doing this, please notify us in advance of the event so that we can check that your kayak is in good ‘sea worthy’ condition. We advise against using inflatable kayaks as they aren't suitable for the nature of this challenge.

We can assure you that if the event had to be cancelled due to Covid, you would be offered an alternative date to take part in this challenge. You can read our Covid promise here.

After signing up you will receive:

A welcome pack

  • A kit list
  • A training plan
  • A Raystede T-shirt
  • Support leading up to the challenge and on the day
  • Lunch on challenge day
  • A medal on completion

Kayak, paddles and buoyancy aids are also included in this challenge, but you will need your own personal water clothing and spares.

If you have any questions about this challenge, you can get in touch by phoning us on 01825 840747 or emailing fundraising@raystede.org.

It's been an extremely tough time and by taking part in this challenge you will help us care for the rescue animals at our centre that so desperately need us. Did you know that every £100 raised could help us buy a month's worth of food, toys and medication for two of our kennel dogs like Bella and Lexi below? We rely entirely on voluntary donations and your sponsorship to care for the animals at Raystede, and are so grateful to people like you who take on challenges for us. Join Team Raystede today and click here to take on this ultimate kayak.
