Guidance and handouts focus on terrapins such as cooters and sliders, as well as Spur‑thighed and Hermann’s tortoises.

Did you know?

Tortoises, terrapins and turtles all belong to the Chelonia group, but you can tell them apart by their feet and where they live...

  • Tortoises live on land and have sturdy, elephant-like feet with claws

  • Terrapins live in freshwater or brackish habitats and have webbed feet with claws

  • Turtles live mostly in the sea and have long flippers for swimming
