The story of Lily, Reed and Newt.

Their story is typical of what we’re experiencing and with the festive season approaching we’re expecting the arrival of more animals just like them. Lily, a young female cat, and her male companions, Reed and Newt, were found together dumped in a box. We don’t know how long they had been left without food or water, but when they came to Raystede they were all very hungry.

They urgently needed food and water, a warm quiet space to hide or roam in and a comfortable bed. Once they were settled we also had to provide basic veterinary care, including worming and flea medication.

A gift of £25 provides cats like Lily, Reed and Newt a warm bed and food and toys specifically to suit their needs, so they can settle more quickly. We don’t know why these lovely cats were dumped, but we do know that they were in crisis as a result, particularly Lily, as she was pregnant!

Lily gave birth to five kittens, including tiny Tiddler (pictured) at Raystede. She needed an emergency caesarean section and would have died without veterinary care.

Lily was too young to have kittens and giving birth was very difficult for her, so much so that she would have died had we not been there to give her an urgent caesarean section. We're so glad that they were found in time, and we were able to help.

The crisis has touched many animal types, but dogs have been particularly hard hit. This year we have had 1,076 requests to take in dogs who can no longer be cared for by their owners.

Layla's story

When Layla, a four-year-old English Pointer came to us, we were astonished by her condition.

It was clear that she had been used for breeding, and there were signs that she had had multiple litters during her short life. Layla had not been cared for as she was underweight and lacked muscle condition. She also had a severe ear infection that was causing her distress, so she urgently needed antibiotic drops twice a day. This poor girl needed good basic care to get her back on track.

A gift of £40 paid for Layla’s essential vaccinations and antibiotics. Together, we were able to stop her immediate suffering and protect her from disease in the future.

Layla has a big heart, and as time went on she began to relax and enjoy cuddles with our staff and volunteers. When she grew stronger we spayed her so that she could never be used for breeding again.
