Walking past new people

Stanley reacts to strangers by barking and lunging because he is worried by them and tries to drive them away. He is currently learning to stay focused on his handler and remain calm.

1. Stanley is reacting to stranger, but this can be quickly resolved. It's important to watch his body language and distract him before he gets to this point.

2. Stanley has learnt to enjoy focusing on his handler, rather than scanning the environment around him for perceived threats, like strangers which could cause him to worry and ultimately react. Training starts initially away from situations where he may be worried, so he can relax and have fun learning. Here he is learning to focus onto his handler, move around with them (so he can move away from and create space from strangers) and step-up onto the handler’s knee or an object, as a confidence boosting activity that creates a positive emotional state. Encouraging movement and step-ups, rather than focusing on strangers, will help him feel less worried.

3. Look at that progress! Putting the training into action shows Stanley focusing on handler, step-up and moving away, whilst a stranger walks past. Whilst Stanley is aware of them, he does not feel like he needs to react and remains relaxed about their presence.
