Boysie Appeal

When birds like Boysie need extra special care, will you help us give them a fighting chance?

Please donate today to take a bird like Boysie under your wing.

At Raystede, we do everything we can to ensure that birds and animals receive the best possible care needed to lead a full and healthy life, whether they remain with us or are rehomed. For some animals, that may mean they need extensive and complex treatment.

As you may be aware, we are seeing significant demand right now for space and resources due to the cost-of-living crisis. However, as far as we’re concerned, it’s business as usual at Raystede and we continue to do all we can to give every creature a fighting chance.

That includes Boysie, the beautiful Red-lored Amazon who is a much-loved resident of our aviary. Boysie came to us as a five-year-old in 1995 and has been a healthy, happy and feisty resident ever since.

But when Boysie took a turn for the worst last Autumn, rapidly losing weight and showing signs of distressed breathing, we immediately knew something was wrong. This was not our cheeky Boysie who loves chatting to his neighbours and cleverly working his way around a puzzle.

A vital CT scan and series of tests, performed by Celine our specialist avian vet, showed that Boysie was in fact a very poorly bird, suffering from multitude of illnesses including an enlarged liver, inflammation of the air sacs, a fungal infection and dehydration. All of which could have been life-threatening if left untreated.

The good news was the scan had given us firm results and enabled us to move forward with a clear treatment plan:

Boysie’s six-month treatment plan included:

  • Antibiotics for aspergillosis and bacterial infection.
  • Fluid therapy to treat dehydration and nebulisation to disinfect through the airways.
  • Regular doses of milk thistle in his drinking water to support the liver to heal.
  • Probiotics (administered on peanut butter and crackers) to build immunity.
  • Antibiotics twice a day to treat the fungal infection.
  • Quarantine in in a large roomy cage to limit his exertion, control his temperature and make it easier to give him his medication.
  • Half an hour a day in a Brooder to provide warmth, humidity, oxygen therapy and nebulisation, in much greater comfort.

We can only provide this specialist treatment and ongoing care for birds like Boysie with support from our animal-loving community.

Anything you donate today will help towards our efforts to care, treat and rehome animals and birds. No matter what.
