Getting your dog’s DNA tested offers more than just breed identification, it can unlock a world of insights into who your canine companion truly is.
From a simple mouth swab, you can discover endless information about their background - it’s the canine version of a genealogy test.
DNA testing can be especially helpful when you have adopted a dog from a rescue centre, allowing you to gain a greater understanding of their genetic make-up as well as learning more about their breed’s physical and behavioural characteristics too.

Better understanding our dogs
Knowing for example that Diego wasn’t just a Chihuahua, he was also made up of several terrier breeds, 11 in fact, allowed the team to better understand some of his characteristics and behaviours.
The DNA testing also confirmed some of what our team already thought about the dogs tested, for example they were pretty sure Dusty (pictured right) was a Border collie x poodle, which the DNA test verified.
These insights are also helpful to pass onto potential adopters too, as the more information we can share about the dogs in our care, the better-informed adopters can be about the dog they are interested in taking into their homes.
Knowing for example that Dusty was very likely to enjoy getting wet, meant would-be adopters needed to be prepared for a soggy dog when out for a walk! It also showed that she had a propensity for anxiety, particularly around new people, so these insights can be useful when used as part of the dog’s ongoing training needs.
Not forgetting our feline friends too
DNA testing isn’t just for dogs, cat owners can also learn some of the key characteristics and traits that make up their moggie too.
So if you think your cat might have the agility of a Burmese or perhaps the chatty nature of Siamese then a DNA test can help you learn more about their breed mix.
